View The Talleys
When Kirk Talley left the Cathedrals and his brother, Roger Talley and sister in law, Debra Talley left the Hoppers; they joined forces to form the Talleys in late 1983 and even won the Singing News Fan Award for Newcomer of the Year in 1984. The Talleys had a sophisticated sound and most people weren’t sure whether to call them Southern Gospel, or Contemporary Christian or Inspirational Christian. Nonetheless, the group encountered much success during their 10 years of traveling together.
The group recorded 8 albums through Word Records and amassed several hit songs including “Thinkin’ ‘bout Home”, “Sweeter as the Days Go By”, “Triumphantly, the Church Will Rise”, “Typical Day”, “Hallelujah, Praise the Lamb” and “He is Here” (which won a Dove Award for Southern Gospel Song of the Year in 1991). Kirk Talley, who wrote ”He is Here,” wrote many of the group’s most popular songs. In fact, “He is Here” has also become an accepted praise song in many churches today.
Debra Talley also became a popular vocalist taking home Favorite Alto and Favorite Female Vocalist Awards in the Singing News Fan Awards several times between 1985 and 1989.
Because of the strain of trying to raise a family on the road, Roger and Debra decided to come off the road in 1993 and Kirk embarked upon a solo career. Several years later, Roger and Debra along with their daughter, Lauren Talley, reformed as the Talley Trio.
